ST. GEORGE – A head-on collision occurred this morning just before noon on state Route-9 at mile marker 23.5.
Lt. Steve Winward with Utah’s Department of Public Safety said that a Jeep Rubicon and a Ford Mustang crashed head on when the jeep was attempting to pass another car and struck the mustang. The mustang spun out and the Jeep went end over end and down an embankment.
The driver of the Jeep was flown to University Medical center in Las Vegas. He was listed in critical but stable condition and is expected to survive.
Two occupants of the Mustang and the passenger from the Jeep were all three ground-transported to Intermountain Healthcare’s Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George. Winward said injuries suffered included broken bones and cuts and are expected to be released with minor injuries.
All occupants from both vehicles were wearing seatbelts.
Winward said that the two in the Jeep are from Toquerville, Utah, and the two in the Mustang are from Italy.
Updated 8:35 p.m. to include residences of the parties involved. Location first given by official statement described the location between Hurricane and Colorado City. That has been deleted. State Route 9 runs from Hurricane to Springdale and the accident occurred at the mile marker given along that route, as testified to by several St. George News citizens who passed the accident today.

We are so happy to hear there were no fatalities. We passed this accident scene on our way to Zions today and by looking at the Mustang, we were certain no one survived. We wish all of the people injured an expeditious recovery.
Now did this happen on the way up to Zion on sr-9 or on the sr-59 out to Colorado City?
Michael, the official report we received said between Hurricane and Colorado City. We did question it because that is state Route 59, as you rightly point out.
It was confirmed as between Hurricane and Colorado City.
However, four of our St. George News “citizens” report having passed this accident today between Virgin and Rockville, and that is SR-9. We have removed the Hurricane-Colorado City description and made a note to this effect at the bottom of the story.
Sometimes even official reports have errors. Correction made with our apologies for the confusion.
I’ve had more people cross the solid line to pass me on SR 9 than on any other highway in the West. It’s a dangerous mix of drivers trying to enjoy the scenery, others in a hurry to get where they’re going, and speed limits way too high for a scenic highway.
such a shame to be in such a hurry to get there 5 minutes faster. Now no one go there.
We were the 1st to arrive at the scene of the accident driving a Subaru Outback. When I saw the Mustang as soon as we turn the curve, it looks like a piece of junk in the highway. Amazingly, everybody survive. Seat belts, Airbags and modern safety car design probably save them.
