ST. GEORGE — Members of the Utah Trucking Association are meeting at the Dixie Center in St. George through Friday to exchange ideas, share stories, learn about new innovations and management trends, and renew old friendships.
Association President Duane Braegger, of Willard, said the convention is going great, with 492 registrants from all over the state, including vendors, carriers and others involved in the trucking industry.
“So far, we have been very successful,” Braegger said.
The association held its board meeting Wednesday, and the convention shifted into high gear Thursday. The exhibit hall was open, and breakout sessions included presentations on the current financial situation in Utah and the nation; financial forecasts for the near future; and family owned businesses and their management.
A third session discussed “Building Your Own Brand,” playing off the theme of this year’s convention, “Trucking the Cowboy Way.”
Trucks and trailers, along with other items of interest, were prominently on display in the exhibit hall. Also present were vendors, including tire and chemical companies, fuel distributors, banks, insurance providers, and even T-shirt salesmen.
The American Trucking Association estimates that 1 in 16 workers in the United States is involved in the trucking industry, and that trucks traveled more than 421 billion miles in 2012. Each year, trucks deliver about 10 billion pounds of freight, or more than 69 percent of the total freight hauled. Just 14.8 percent of the nation’s freight is carried by rail.
The convention continued through Thursday, with a golf tournament scheduled for Friday, weather permitting.
