CEDAR CITY — Celebrate migratory birds with family and friends at the International Migratory Bird Day Festival on Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon at the West Canyon Park in Cedar City.
This annual event marks the return of migratory birds to Southern Utah with informational booths, activities and exhibits.
Biologists from the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources invite the public to watch as they capture birds with mist nests for banding, starting at 6:30 a.m. Bird banding data is useful in both research and management projects. Individual identification of birds makes possible studies of dispersal and migration, behavior and social structure, life-span and survival rate, reproductive success and population growth.
Leading up to the event is the annual poster contest with the theme “Restore Birds, Restore Habitat.” The submission date has passed and contest winners will be announced at the festival.
The Migratory Bird Day Festival is hosted by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, Zion National Park, Southern Utah University, The Grind, Home Depot, Rocky Mountain Power and the Bureau of Land Management Cedar City Field Office.
