ST. GEORGE – Motorists traveling on Interstate 15 Thursday evening are advised to avoid the Virgin River Gorge and take old Highway 91 in light of a traffic obstruction in the Gorge construction zone.
As of 7:45 p.m., a commercial 18-wheeler has broken down on northbound I-15 in the Virgin River Gorge, Arizona Department of Public Safety Sgt. John T. Bottoms said.
Anyone preparing to travel northbound through the Gorge is asked to immediately reroute to Highway 91, Bottoms said, as traffic is severely backed up.

Why don’t they just UPGRADE “Old US-91” to provide a DECENT and SAFER route?
That gorge route was expensive to build, is constantly under construction and its weather conditions are no better than on the older route. AT LEAST if there was a wreck on the older route, no one would be stuck in the gorge for hours, unable to turn around.
