HURRICANE — The afternoon started with a mix-up for the Hurricane-Beaver girls soccer game. The Beavers thought the match started an hour later than scheduled. As they got to Hurricane and exited the team bus, the coaches for both squads decided to have the JV teams take the field first and play the varsity match second, a little over two and a half hours after the original start time.
Regardless of the start time, Hurricane ended the game early with an 8-0 mercy-rule shortened game Thursday evening.
It didn’t take long for Hurricane’s first score. At 38:04, Jayden Langford faked out the Beaver goalie and tapped the ball in for the score.
Most of the first half was played on the Beaver High School defensive end of the pitch with the Hurricane players getting off several good shots. Ten minutes after the first goal, Heather Stout stole the ball and scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-0.
At about the 25th minute of the first half, Kylee Stevens passed to Stout for her second goal and the third for the Tigers. Three minutes later, Stevens, using several impressive moves, took the ball in herself for the fourth goal of the half.
The first-half barrage continued as a minute later Shanel Stevens, who happened to be celebrating a birthday, sent a corner kick just in front of the goal where little sister Kylee sent it into the net for her second score and the fifth for HHS.
The Tigers added a goal by Natalia Lance, assisted by Jayden Langford, and a seventh score that was accidentally made by a Beaver player into her own goal. Hurricane went into halftime up 7-0.
The second half started much like the first with most of the action taking place on Beaver’s end of the field. Tiger goalie Jaquois Allen was rarely challenged and easily stopped the shots that came her way. At the 29:42 mark in the second half, the “mercy rule” was evoked as Hurricane’s Talia Wilcock set-up Shanel Stevens for a nice birthday present of the eighth goal of the night for the Tigers and an early end to the match.
Hurricane High’s coach, Luke Stevens, indicated that he was looking forward to seeing how his girls would match-up in the tough Region 9 competition, which starts in a couple of weeks.
