ST. GEORGE — When one driver stopped for children in a St. George crosswalk Thursday afternoon, another driver smashed into the back of him resulting in a head injury and a banged up vehicle.
The driver of a white Toyota SUV was traveling east on 700 South in St. George around 3:15 p.m. before stopping at the crosswalk at 100 East to allow some children to cross, St. George Police Sgt. Sam Despain said.
At this same time, the driver of a gold Kia sedan was following the SUV.
“She looked away for a minute, looked up,” Despain said, “didn’t see the SUV, had stopped, and there was a rear-end collision.”
Rod Winn, of St. George, was driving the white SUV with his wife, Sharon, as his passenger.
“We were on the way to the temple, and got rear-ended,” Winn said. “We were going east on 700, there were two kids standing here at the crosswalk waiting to cross when we stopped for them. We were stopped for maybe five or 10 seconds because the traffic on the other side wasn’t stopping, and then we were rear-ended.”
The driver of the Kia sustained injuries to her forehead, Despain said. She refused ambulance transport to the hospital because her family arrived and transported her in their car.
The Winns were not injured in the crash, Rod Winn said, and were able to drive their SUV from the scene.
Despain said the Kia sustained major front-end damage and had to be towed.
The driver of the Kia was issued a citation for following too close, Despain said.

I’ve nearly been rear-ended there several times. As usual in St George, the posted speed is pretty much ignored.
