CEDAR CITY — Special Olympics Utah will host one of four 2016 Polar Plunges Saturday at the Cedar City Aquatic Center when all are welcome to brave the water, “Freezin’ for a Reason,” individually or in teams, many in costume.
Everyone participating will plunge into the freezing outdoor pool beginning at noon, raising funds and awareness for children and adults with intellectual disabilities served by Special Olympics Utah.
One of the best parts of the event is seeing people and groups leap into freezing-cold water wearing their wildest costumes. There will be a costume contest at 11:30 a.m. before the plunge and Special Olympics Utah athletes will pick the winners of the most creative, coolest, craziest or cutest individual and team costumes.
This marks the return of the Special Olympics Polar Plunge to Cedar City, which was last held in January 2012.
“We are excited to be able to provide this great event with the support of the community,” D’Arcy Dixon Pignanelli, president and CEO of Special Olympics Utah, said. “We have local teams right in Cedar City, and the money raised at the Polar Plunge helps provide the athletes sports training, competition and other programs at no cost to them or their families.”
The Polar Plunge in Cedar City will kick off four plunges to be held across the state of Utah, including events in Provo, Salt Lake City and St. George. A complete list of Polar Plunge events is available here.
The Polar Plunge is a signature Special Olympics fundraising event where warm-hearted plungers can support Special Olympics Utah athletes. Individuals, students, Special Olympics Utah athletes, community members and corporate groups are all invited to participate.
Registration and fundraising
Plungers of all ages may register and raise money to jump into the ice-cold swimming pool. Plungers under 18 must have parental permission.
Advance registration, fundraising and sponsorship opportunities can be found online here.
After the initial registration fee of $10, participants will raise funds or pay the remaining amount due: $40 for adults or $20 for students and Special Olympics Utah athletes. Each plunger who registers in advance will receive an official 2016 Polar Plunge T-shirt.
Day-of registration is available beginning at 10 a.m. but no T-shirt is guaranteed. Registration fees on Saturday will be $50 for adults, $30 for students and Special Olympics Athletes.
This is a free community event for spectators. Participants can invite friends and family to come watch them as they jump into the cold water.
Plungers will be part of the “coolest” event of the year. Prizes will be given to the plunger who raises the most money.
