ST. GEORGE – The Dixie girls pulled off their first region victory while Snow Canyon and Cedar put their teams out in front of the pack with wins over Pine View and Desert Hills. Here’s a look at Tuesday night’s action:

Snow Canyon 53, Pine View 41

It was again a dismal second quarter that doomed the Panther offense. After taking an 8-6 lead after one, Pine View could only manage one basket in the second quarter.

“The effort was there,” said Pine View head coach Chris Brinagh. “We are just not hitting shots. We had several missed layups and free throws. Our poor shooting dug us into an early hole.”

The deficit was 19-10 at halftime and the Lady Warriors would come out of the break and extend the lead.

“They did a good job of collapsing into the lane,” said Snow Canyon head coach Dan Roden. “At halftime, we told our girls to penetrate and dish. Our shooters were getting good open looks.”

The lead was 15 going into the fourth, 36-21. Pine View made a run and would eventually cut the lead to 6 points. Snow Canyon pulled the ball out to run clock to force the Lady Panthers to foul.

“It was a bit nerve-wracking initially,” said Roden. “Our two best ball-handlers (Madison Mooring and Natalie Coulam) were hurt. So we had to rely on some young players to handle the ball at the end.”

For Pine View, point guard Claire Newby returned. The sophomore had broken her collarbone in the first minute of the first game this season.

“It was nice to get Claire back,” said Brinagh. “Just her presence on the floor was a great lift for our team.”

Individually, Shaylee Reed had an outstanding performance for Snow Canyon with a near-perfect shooting game. Reed was 4 for 5 from the field and 9 for 9 from the line for 17 points to lead all players. She also had 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Mooring scored 13 points before going down with injury in the third quarter. Nikenna Durante had 8 points and 7 rebounds.

For Pine View, Tayvia Ah Quin scored 11 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Newby, in her first game back, had 8 points.

With the win, Snow Canyon moves to 15-2 overall and 6-1 in Region 9. The Warriors will host Hurricane on Thursday night. Pine View moves to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in region play. The Panthers will host Cedar on Thursday.

Cedar 57, Desert Hills 49

The Lady Reds avenged an earlier loss to Desert Hills with an 8-point victory at home.

The game stayed close throughout, but Cedar was able to incrementally add to their lead until it finally got to double-digits in the final period. Desert Hills made a comeback and even pulled to within two points with just 1:23 to play. But Maisie Elison hit five of her six free throws late, while Cedar got defensive stops at the other end, to get to the final margin.

Individually, Ashley Beckstrand led all scorers with 24 points. Rylee Jensen added 9 points for the Lady Thunder. Courtney Morley and Jessica Whetman scored 19 and 14 points, respectively, and together were a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line.

Cedar has now won five straight after losing their first two region games and sport an overall record of 14-5. The Lady Reds will travel to Pine View on Thursday. Desert Hills falls to third in the region standings at 4-3 and is 9-9 overall. The Lady Thunder will host Dixie on Thursday night.

Dixie 62, Hurricane 58

The Lady Flyers blitzed Hurricane on its home court in the first half with a 39-21 barrage. Then they hung on to pull out the victory, the first one in region for Dixie.

Individually, Dixie’s Kelsea Barker led all scorers with 22 points. She was joined in double figures by Ayla Klungervik with 13. Lexie Paxton, Ilah Wallace and Kiesha Jones scored 7 apiece.

For Hurricane, Carrie Marshall led with 21 points. Morgan Huntsman and Taylor Anderson joined her in double figures with 13 and 11, respectively. Jayden Langford contributed 9 points.

Dixie’s win broke a nine-game losing streak and gives them a 1-6 record in Region 9 and 3-14 record overall. The Flyers will travel to Desert Hills Thursday night. Hurricane falls to 8-11 overall and 2-5 in Region 9. The Tigers will travel to Snow Canyon on Thursday night.
