CEDAR CITY — The monarch is the jewel of the butterfly world but little is known about their migration in the western United States. Two organizations are putting on workshops for the public to help unravel the mystery.
The workshops, sponsored by the Southwest Monarch Study and Monarch Joint Venture will present information about monarch biology, migration and conservation plus an opportunity to join Citizen Science research in Utah and the southwestern United States.
Learn about the history of chasing monarchs, the monarch life cycle and the importance of milkweed, or Asclepias, the monarchs’ only host plant.
Workshops in Utah are free and open to everyone. They will be held in Cedar City, Logan, Moab and two in Salt Lake City.
The Southwest Monarch Study is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to monarch butterfly research and conservation. It is made possible through funding by the Monarch Joint Venture.
Presenter Gail Morris is the coordinator of the Southwest Monarch Study, Monarch Watch conservation specialist and vice president of the Monarch Butterfly Fund supporting research and development in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Mexico.
