WASHINGTON CITY – Heavy holiday traffic and the Green Springs/Exit 10 interchange on Interstate 15 don’t always mix well. Such was the case of a rear-end accident that occurred Friday afternoon.

Around 12:45 p.m. traffic was backing up on the northbound highway off-ramp heading toward one of the least-loved intersections in Washington City. While heading down the ramp, traffic came to a quick stop, causing the driver of an SUV to begin to hit the brakes, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Larry Mower said.

The SUV nearly came to a complete stop when it was hit from behind by a jeep, Mower said. The jeep’s driver hadn’t noticed traffic had stopped as quickly as it had and he didn’t slow down in time.

The resulting rear-end collision munched the back of the SUV and cracked its bumper, while the front of the jeep, which had a heavy after-market bumper and winch, appeared unscathed.

No injuries resulted from the collision, and due to it being a holiday, Mower went easy on the jeep’s driver and let him go without a ticket.

“No, I didn’t cite him because of the holiday,” Mower said, “but I told him the report would reflect that he was at fault.”

Issues with the congestion caused at the Green Springs/Exit 10 Interchange and its resulting nightmare intersection – which does little to engender thoughts of peace and goodwill in the hearts of motorists who experience it – are hoped to be alleviated to a degree in the near-future with the pending completion of the highway underpass by the Red Cliffs Mall.

The possibility of another highway exit at mile 11 is also being explored by the Utah Department of Transportation and Washington City road planners.
