CEDAR CITY — Following this spring’s graduations and end-of-school-year celebrations, state Sen. Evan Vickers, R-Cedar City, is inviting parents to take part in a volunteer opportunity.
The opportunity is for three volunteers, first-come, first-served, to serve on the Utah Educational Standards Assessment Committee for grades 3-8.
The volunteers meet for four days in the year, eight hours per day, and review the educational standards for the coming year, which are then implemented by the State Office of Education.
The position is unpaid, but the State Office of Education can arrange and pay for overnight lodging when necessary. The meetings are typically held at the state capitol in Salt Lake City, and while it’s preferred you currently have children attending public schools, it’s not necessary.

I appreciate that money is left out of this. I hope it attracts well informed, passionate people who are ready to stand up for morality, integrity, and honesty in education. At the same time I wish that teachers were the highest paid profession, because they are the sculptures of our future generations.
