WASHINGTON CITY — A power outage in Washington City Sunday evening is currently affecting customers in the Quail Ridge area.

Update 9:10 p.m. As of 9 p.m. Sunday, the Washington City Power Department estimates that it will take a few hours to restore power to all customers. Crews found a bird in the power line that caused the outage.

There is currently no ETA on power restoration, a representative from the Washington City Power Department told St. George News.

The Power Department could not confirm how many customers are affected by the outage.

Crews have been sent to the area, according to an advisory on the department’s Facebook page.

“We have found two main fuses that have blown,” the advisory reads, “we are still looking for the cause as to why they have blown.”

So how does a bird cause this?

Birds (and humans and other flesh and blood) conduct electricity and can therefore cause a short between two wires. That much electricity going where it shouldn’t can break other things, and has to be checked before the power can be safely restored. This probably wasn’t a sparrow, it was likely a much larger bird.
