CEDAR CITY — Police are searching for a driver that reportedly abandoned a large fifth wheel recreational camp trailer that tipped over as he was exiting Interstate 15 Monday night.

Updated Sept. 6 at 9 a.m. Sgt Ryan Bauer of UHP told St. George News / Cedar City News that the driver was located and cited for leaving the scene of an accident and for a lane travel violation.

The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. when dispatchers received a call reporting that a trailer had partially rolled over on the off-ramp of I-15’s Exit 59, which makes a U-turn before intersecting with 200 North.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Ryan Bauer said the driver of the vehicle towing the trailer was apparently going too fast when he took the exit.

“The trailer came off and rolled,” Bauer said. “The driver left the scene, and as of last night we were still looking for him.”

Bauer said Tuesday that UHP investigators were still attempting to locate the driver, who is also believed to be the registered owner of the trailer and some motorcycles it was carrying.

It took at least an hour for tow truck operators to remove the trailer from the scene Monday night, Bauer said.

Cedar City Police officers also responded and helped with traffic control.

This report is based on preliminary information provided by law enforcement or other emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.
