ST. GEORGE — A story about perfume salesmen using chloroform to kidnap potential fragrance buyers at night could be enough to frighten someone from going outside alone.
That story, however, is false, according to the St. George Police Department. There have been men selling perfume in St. George parking lots, but they aren’t sneaking chloroform, a sweet-smelling liquid that can render someone unconscious, into the perfume bottles, police said.
Police already respond to reports about perfume salespeople when they are alerted to their presence.
A post being shared across social media claims police in St. George were warning people to not be alone at night because of men who are trying to sell perfume to people.
“But it is actually CHLOROFORM they are smelling! They are putting their unconscious victims into the vehicles for HUMAN TRAFFICKING!!” reads the post being circulated across Facebook.
Whoever wrote the original post ended the post by writing “Thought I’d share this because these things are real, and they keep happening.”
But according to police, these things are not real and they are not happening.

In a Facebook post to debunk the myth, St. George police continued the trend of capitalizing parts of sentences to denote importance.
“Let me reiterate, THERE HAVE BEEN NO REPORTS MADE TO ST. GEORGE POLICE DEPARTMENT of anyone attempting to abduct a person by using chloroform during the above alleged circumstances. Nor have there been any person listed as missing related to a salesmen,” according to the statement from St. George Police.
Even if there were people trying to kidnap people with chloroform across St. George, it might be a little harder than the original post implies. Unlike how it’s portrayed in movies or TV shows, a perfectly measured dose of chloroform takes at least five minutes to make someone go unconscious, according to ScienceABC.com.
St. George Police encourages anyone who sees anything suspicious to call them at 435-627-4300 or 911.
