Utah Tech softball, baseball each hosting 3-game series against WAC foes

ST. GEORGE — College softball and baseball fans have several chances to catch the Trailblazers in action this weekend.

The Utah Tech University women’s softball team (11-18 overall, 4-2 Western Athletic Conference) hosts Grand Canyon (27-8, 6-2) for a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday. Game times are 2:05 p.m. and 4:35 p.m. for the twinbill and 12:05 p.m. for the stand-alone with all games at Karl Brooks Field in St. George.

Meanwhile, Brust Hurst Field will be the site for three baseball games as the Trailblazers (7-17, 5-4) host the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (12-11, 2-4).

Thursday’s series opener and Game 2 on Friday start at 6:05 p.m., followed by Saturday’s series finale at noon at Bruce Hurst Field.

Softball ace WAC Player of the Week

Junior pitcher Attlyn Johnston was named WAC Pitcher of the Week on Monday after going 1-1 last weekend with a 1.27 ERA. She threw 11.0 innings while striking out 13 and walking two.

In a 1-0 win over Stephen F. Austin in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, she twirled a complete game shutout limiting SFA to six hits while striking out a season-high nine and walked none. She added four innings of work in her start on Sunday striking out four only allowing five hits, three runs, two earned, and struck out four.

After winning 2 out of 3 from the Ladyjacks, the Trailblazers returned home but fell 9-1 to Brigham Young University in a non-conference matchup Tuesday. Utah Tech totaled five hits with a pair of singles from Marisa Rubio while getting doubles from both Carly Eldredge and Madisen Duryea.

Baseball team bests Seattle U

The Trailblazers took 2 out of 3 at Seattle U last week. After dropping the series opener, Utah Tech won the next two.

In the series finale, a 13-4 victory, Hank Dodson pounded out three hits, while Aaron Perez and Petey Soto Jr. each had two hits and three RBI. The Trailblazers pounced on Seattle U from the onset, striking for six two-out runs over their two offensive frames to build an insurmountable lead.

In Friday’s win, Jack Walker doubled twice and junior righthander Ky Decker hurled six solid innings en route to a 6-2 victory on a soggy Saturday afternoon at Bannerwood Ballpark.
