Region 9 boys volleyball: Pine View, Crimson Cliffs share region title; teams eye playoffs

ST. GEORGE —The Region 9 boys volleyball regular season wrapped up Tuesday night, with Pine View and Crimson Cliffs both finishing 11-1 and sharing the region title.

The Crimson Cliffs Mustangs won back-to-back matches on successive nights to claim their share of first place. The Mustangs outlasted the Cedar Reds in Cedar City on Monday night in a five-set battle, 24-26, 25-15, 25-19, 23-25, 15-10. Then, in Tuesday’s regular-season finale at home, Crimson Cliffs defeated Snow Canyon, 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-17, 25-23).

Meanwhile, Pine View Panthers concluded their regular season with a home sweep of Desert Hills on Tuesday night, 25-15, 25-20, 25-12.

The Region 9 co-champions’ only losses came against each other, with Pine View winning at home 3-2 on March 28 and Crimson Cliffs winning in a 3-0 sweep at home on April 23.

Both teams finished among the top five in the final 4A RPI rankings, which were released by the Utah High School Activities Association on Wednesday. Pine View earned the No. 3 seed and Crimson Cliffs is seeded No. 5 in the 4A state tournament, scheduled to take place May 10-11 at Utah Valley University in Orem.

Before next weekend’s tournament, the ninth through the 24th seeds in the 4A classification will have first-round play-in games on Saturday to determine who advances to play at UVU.

Two Region 9 schools will play each other on Saturday afternoon (May 4), as No. 16 ranked Hurricane (6-6, 10-14) hosts No. 17 Snow Canyon (4-8, 9-16), starting at 1 p.m. The Tigers and Warriors split their matches during the season. The winner of Saturday’s game will face top-ranked Orem when the tournament opens the following Friday.

Three other Region 9 teams will be playing on the road on Saturday afternoon, with No. 18 Desert Hills playing at No. 15 Cottonwood, No. 21 Cedar playing at No. 12 Payson and No. 24 Dixie playing at No. 9 Jordan.
