St. George Eye Center awards scholarships to local students

ST. GEORGE – The St. George Eye Center, a member of the Central Utah Clinic network of providers, awarded two $1,000 college scholarships to local high school students in an essay contest. The winners were Braxton Murdock, Desert Hills High School, and Samuel Allen, Hurricane High School.

Drs. Snow Slade, Jason Hendrix and Mark Hunt sponsored the scholarship to encourage students to pursue STEM-related careers, particularly in medicine and health sciences. Applicants were selected from the six area high schools based on an essay, grade point average, college aptitude test scores and letters of recommendation. A small selection committee then selected the students they felt were most deserving of the award.

“I remember my senior year, and the anxiety that came with applying to college and trying to understand how I was going to pay for it,” Dr. Slade said. “The intent of the scholarship was to demonstrate our commitment to the Southern Utah community and help students aspiring to the noble career of medicine.”

Braxton Murdock hopes to become a pediatrician. He has worked part time through high school, is involved in the band and ballroom dance programs and has taken many advanced placement courses.

Samuel Allen plans to become an anesthesia provider. He plays soccer and was named the most valuable player on his junior varsity squad last year. Allen is currently working toward an Eagle Scout ranking in the Boy Scouts of America, plays guitar and is a graphic artist.
