ST. GEORGE — With the filing period for candidates running for public office having come to a close Monday, the list of contenders for state and federal office is extensive.
According to Utah.Vote.gov, seven people — Democratic incumbent President Joe Biden, independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and five others — make up the list of those who have filed to run for president of the United States and will appear on Utah’s ballot. The majority of those candidates are Democrats and will be whittled down to a singular candidate in the March 5 primary.
Utah Republicans will choose their favored candidate for president during precinct meetings in which the majority will choose from candidates such as former President Donald Trump and others like former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christi, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
The race to succeed Sen. Mitt Romney as Utah’s next senator has drawn out 16 candidates, which includes three Democrats, two Independent Americans and 11 Republicans. Among those recently covered by St. George News are former Utah House Speaker Brad Wilson, Congressman John Curtis and Brent Orrin Hatch, son of late Sen. Orrin Hatch.
Five candidates have filed to run for Utah’s 2nd Congressional District — three Republicans, a Democrat and a Constitution Party candidate. Among the Republican candidates are Rep. Celeste Maloy, who recently won a special election to replace former Rep. Chris Stewart, U.S. Army veteran Col. Colby Jenkins and former senate candidate Ty Jensen.
State offices have multiple candidates seeking to secure a position as the next governor or attorney general.
Gov. Spencer Cox has filed for reelection and is one of five Republicans now vying for the seat, which also includes Rep. Phil Lyman. On the Democrat side is Rep. Brian King of Salt Lake City. In all, nine people are seeking the governor’s seat in 2024.
With sitting Attorney General Sean Reyes announcing he would not seek reelection, eight people have signed on to become Utah’s next top cop. Half of the candidates are Republican with two Democrats and two third-party candidates rounding out the contenders.
The offices of state treasurer and state auditor are also up for grabs this year.
State senate races impacting Southern Utah include Senate Districts 27 and 29. Senate District 27, which covered parts of eastern Washington and western Kane counties and multiple other counties, will likely see little to no change as Sen. Derrin Owens has no opponents in the race. This is not the case for Senate District 29.
Represented by Sen. Don Ipson and covering the majority of Washington County west of Interstate 15, Senate District 75 has two fellow Republicans who have filed to run for the position along with a Democrat.
House Districts 69-75, which cover all of Southern Utah, are all up for grabs. While some incumbents will face challengers, others will run unopposed as they were the only ones to file in their respective races.
House District 69 – which covers the bulk of south-central and southeastern Utah – will get a new representative as Lyman hasn’t filed for reelection. Instead, he has opted to run for the Republican nomination for governor. Four people – three Republicans and one Democratic – have filed to run for this seat.
In House District 70, which covers western Iron County, as well as Piute and Sevier counties, incumbent Republican Rep. Carl Albrecht will once again face United Utah candidate Zeno Parry for the seat.
House District 71, covering Iron County east of I-15, is currently represented by Republican Rep. Rex. Shipp who is running to reelection. Filed to run against him is Democrat candidate Steve Merrill.
The races for House districts 72, 73 and 74 are uncontested with the incumbents as the only candidates. These districts cover parts of the St. George metro and greater Washington County area.
House District 75, which covers a part of St. George and the communities along state Route 18, will see incumbent Rep. Walt Brooks take on Democratic challenger Joshua Dutson.
What follows is a list of the candidates filed in Utah to run into the races highlighted above and whether or not they intend to collect signatures to be on the primary ballot, according to Vote.Utah.gov.
