ST. GEORGE — St. George Musical Theater has been part of the Southern Utah arts community for over 25 years. And with that longevity has come a long-awaited theater it can call its own.
SGMT announced in a news release it is moving forward with its own state-of-the-art facility, thanks to the support of Washington County, the city of St. George, private donors and the state of Utah.
The sign revealing the site of the new facility was placed May 13 with distinguished members of the board and community in attendance. The ceremony signifies the beginning of St. George Musical Theater’s future. The sign can be seen just south of the old Cinema 6 on South Main Street, marking the location of the theater.
Situated on South Main Street, the chosen site presents an ideal location for the new theater, the news release said. The new building will “capture the essence of St. George’s scenery and heritage with a modern and contemporary design.”
Over the years, St. George Musical Theater has faced challenges, including overcoming displacement from its original venue. However, it found a new home in the Historic Opera House, nestled in the heart of downtown St. George, the news release said.
The spacious layout of the new theater will accommodate a 375-seat audience while preserving the intimate charm of the theater group’s “cherished in-the-round style productions. Its new design will elevate the experience of live performance to new heights while still embracing the feeling of attending a local show,” according to the news release.
The expanded capacity will allow for more ambitious productions and accommodate a larger audience, fueling the growth of the local arts scene. St. George Musical Theater eagerly anticipates broadening its range of shows, educational programs and community outreach initiatives with the construction of its new theater, the news release said.
“The new theater will not only provide a talent platform for local performers but also foster more high-profile collaborations with arts organizations,” the news release said. “The economic impact cannot be overlooked, as the new theater is expected to attract more visitors, stimulating local businesses and promoting tourism in the area.”
Community members and theater enthusiasts are encouraged to attend the St. George Chamber of Commerce event June 28 when further details about the construction of the new theater and give attendees an opportunity to learn more about the future of St. George Musical Theater.
